Thaipusam Mythology & Legend
According to the Skanda Purana, Goddess Parvati gave Murugan a vel (spear) to defeat Surapadman. Thaipusam commemorates this. Idumban (a devotee) carried two hills as kavadi; the kavadi tradition honours his devotion and Murugan's grace.
