Hartalika Teej Mythology & Legend
According to the Shiva Purana, Parvati observed a strict fast and prayed to win Shiva as her husband. Her friend (sakhi) took her to a forest so her father could not marry her to Vishnu. The word Hartalika is derived from "harit" (abduction) and "aalika" (friend). Shiva was pleased and accepted Parvati.
